Microsoft PMax Imports: Audit Audiences, Goals, and Sync Rules
Microsoft Advertising announced on April 16, 2026, that Google Performance Max campaigns with eligible new customer acquisition goals can be imported into Microsoft Advertising. The update reduces setup work, but it does not create one-to-one structural or measurement parity.
The practical risk is launching a campaign that looks familiar in the Microsoft interface while using different audiences, customer classifications, conversion goals, or recurring-update rules. Treat the first import as a controlled deployment and measurement review—not as a campaign clone.

What changes during the import
Microsoft says existing Microsoft new customer acquisition configurations are not overridden by the import. The current import documentation also states that Microsoft supports purchase-based new customer acquisition goals, while unsupported goal types are not imported.
Audience handling can differ from the Google source campaign:
- Google website-visitor segments may become equivalent Microsoft rule-based remarketing lists.
- Google auto-created All Visitors or All Converters lists may map to corresponding Microsoft lists.
- If the source NCA goal uses an unsupported list, such as Customer Match, Microsoft may offer an All Converters list as a replacement or import the campaign without an audience list.
- Customers classified as unknown in a Microsoft PMax NCA campaign are treated as existing customers.
That last point is a reporting and interpretation issue. “Unknown” does not prove that a person is an existing customer; it is Microsoft’s conservative classification choice. If many conversions fall into that category, reported new-customer volume may not be directly comparable with Google Ads.
Do not assume audience equivalence because two lists have similar names. A replacement list may have different eligibility, match quality, membership, or suppression behavior from the Google source list.
What to do next
- Document the Google source campaign. Record the NCA mode, customer definitions, purchase conversion goal, audience lists, audience sizes, bidding approach, reporting classifications, landing-page URLs, and recent baseline performance.
- Review import settings before launch. Microsoft’s import controls include options affecting conversion goals, audience targets, budgets, bids, bidding strategies, URLs, statuses, and updates to existing entities. Do not enable every update option by default.
- Inspect audience outcomes. After the import, identify which lists were created, substituted, skipped, or attached to the campaign. Pay particular attention to Customer Match replacements and any All Converters audience.
- Verify conversion tracking. Confirm that the intended Microsoft conversion goals are present and that the Microsoft Universal Event Tracking tag is recording the relevant website activity. For ecommerce, compare purchase conversions separately from secondary actions such as page views, sign-ups, or other micro-conversions.
- Keep ownership explicit. For recurring imports, document whether Google Ads or Microsoft Advertising owns budgets, bids, bidding strategies, goals, audiences, URLs, and campaign status. A later sync can update existing entities and overwrite deliberate Microsoft-side changes when those options are enabled.
- Validate before increasing spend. Review audience counts, total conversions, new-versus-existing classifications, unknown volume, CPA, ROAS, Final URL reporting, and landing-page distribution. Keep the imported campaign paused when appropriate until tracking and settings have been checked.
Google’s customer lifecycle guidance also deserves a separate review. Google reporting can include non-purchase conversions as additional conversions, while purchase conversions support the lifecycle objective. Comparing platform totals without separating those actions can produce a misleading view of acquisition efficiency.
The safest operating model is to treat the import as a deployment with a written measurement checklist. Microsoft Advertising can reduce campaign setup time, but the business still owns the harder questions: whether the audiences mean the same thing, whether new customers are classified consistently, whether purchase tracking is working, and who is allowed to change the campaign after synchronization begins.
