Google AMP Change: Audit Publisher URLs, Canonicals, and Redirects
Google’s July 1, 2026 documentation update changes how Search connects users to AMP pages: users are now sent directly to the publisher’s AMP host page instead of relying on references to the AMP viewer, AMP Cache, or signed exchange.
That reduces AMP-specific delivery maintenance, but it does not make AMP URLs self-correcting or automatically optional. Google still indexes AMP pages like other web pages and applies its normal Search standards. Where the WordPress risk moved
The highest-risk failure is now a broken, blocked, redirected, invalid, or mismeasured publisher-hosted AMP URL.
Start with a representative sample of AMP pages: recent posts, high-traffic articles, older content, and templates containing forms, subscriptions, ecommerce actions, or other conversion steps. Test both the AMP and canonical versions in a browser, with curl, and in Google Search Console’s URL Inspection workflow.
Confirm that the AMP URL returns the intended page with a clean 200 response. Check for login walls, soft 404s, redirect loops, long redirect chains, intermittent 5xx errors, and 429 responses caused by hosting or bot-mitigation rules. Google’s crawler documentation says crawlers generally follow up to 10 redirect hops, but a direct 301 or 308 to the correct destination is still preferable. Persistent 5xx and 429 responses can cause Google to slow crawling, and URLs that persistently return server errors may eventually be removed from the index.
Then inspect the relationship between versions:
- The canonical page should identify the AMP page with
rel="amphtml". - The AMP page should identify the preferred canonical URL with
rel="canonical". - Use consistent absolute URLs, HTTPS, host variants, and trailing-slash conventions.
- Keep internal links, XML sitemaps, redirects, and canonical tags aligned.
Canonical tags are signals rather than absolute commands. Conflicting redirects, internal links, sitemap entries, or page content can influence which URL Google selects as canonical.
What to do next
- Check crawl access. Review
robots.txt, robots meta directives, andX-Robots-Tagheaders for both the AMP and canonical versions. Google’s AMP validation guidance specifically recommends allowing Googlebot to crawl both versions and removing accidental exclusion directives. - Validate the AMP templates. Run the AMP Test and, where structured data applies, the Rich Results Test. Use the AMP status report to monitor sitewide issues. A passing validation result does not guarantee crawling, indexing, rich results, rankings, or traffic.
- Compare the user experience. Open representative AMP URLs directly on mobile and desktop. Confirm that the content, navigation, forms, calls to action, subscription flows, and other important actions work as intended. Google’s guidance says users should be able to experience the same content and complete the same actions on AMP pages as on corresponding canonical pages where possible.
- Re-test measurement. AMP and non-AMP templates can use different analytics configurations. Verify pageviews, referrers, conversion events, cookies, and consent behavior on directly accessed AMP pages. Test the actual
amp-analyticsendpoints and events your business depends on rather than assuming the previous Google delivery path handled measurement correctly. - Decide whether AMP still earns its maintenance cost. If AMP no longer serves a clear publishing or user-experience purpose, plan a controlled retirement. Inventory indexed and internally linked AMP URLs, choose appropriate redirects, review canonicals and sitemaps, and monitor Search Console and server logs after the change. Do not delete the URLs abruptly.
For most WordPress teams, the first priority is not changing the AMP plugin. It is proving that publisher-hosted AMP URLs respond reliably, remain crawlable, expose the correct canonical relationship, preserve equivalent user actions, and record useful measurement. That audit can separate an indexing problem from a delivery, redirect, template, validation, or attribution problem before it affects reporting or qualified search traffic.
