AI Overviews: What Small Businesses Should Measure Beyond Clicks
AI Overviews are changing the relationship between search visibility and website traffic. A page can appear as a supporting link, earn a Search Console impression, or contribute to an answer without producing a visit, lead, call, or purchase.
That makes clicks useful but incomplete. Small businesses should report AI-feature visibility separately from qualified outcomes, then reconcile Search Console with analytics, call tracking, CRM, advertising, and ecommerce data.

What the evidence actually shows
A preprint submitted on August 5, 2026 analyzed one month of Google browsing behavior from a representative panel of 900 U.S. adults. It found that clicks to sources cited in AI Overviews occurred in about 1% of AI Overview visits. The study also reported associations between AI Overviews, fewer clicks, and more browsing sessions ending.
Those results are a measurement warning, not a universal organic CTR benchmark or proof that AI Overviews caused every observed decline. The approximately 1% figure measures one specific action: clicking a cited source during an AI Overview visit. It should not be applied automatically to every query, industry, device, or business model.
Google presents a more mixed view. Its guidance says AI Overviews and AI Mode provide links to supporting websites and may help users explore a wider range of sources. Google also says that clicks from result pages containing AI Overviews can be higher quality, with users more likely to spend time on the destination site.
Both observations can be true. A business may receive fewer informational-search visits while the smaller group that clicks has stronger engagement or purchase intent. A local service company may see fewer research sessions but still generate qualified calls. A WooCommerce store may maintain revenue through branded searches, returning customers, direct traffic, or assisted conversions even when non-brand clicks flatten.
What to do next
Use a two-layer measurement model.
Layer one: AI-feature visibility. If the property has access to Google’s generative-AI performance reports, monitor impressions, appearing pages, countries, devices, and dates. Google says these reports cover AI Overviews and AI Mode but are being rolled out to a subset of websites. Continue tracking standard Search Console impressions, clicks, CTR, and position, but treat CTR as a diagnostic signal rather than the final business KPI.
Search Console defines an impression as a link seen or potentially seen in Search. For AI Overviews, the source link generally must be scrolled or expanded into view to count. An AI impression does not prove that a complete answer was read, that the brand was mentioned prominently, or that the user had commercial intent.
For source mentions that are not captured as a dedicated metric, maintain a small manual sample. Record the query, date, device, AI feature, visible brand or page mention, cited URL, and whether the result offers a meaningful path to the site. Treat that log as directional evidence, not a complete market-share measurement.
Layer two: qualified outcomes. Join Search Console trends with GA4 landing sessions, form submissions, call tracking, CRM stages, advertising conversions, and WooCommerce revenue. Reconcile attribution windows and conversion definitions before comparing totals because these systems measure different parts of the customer journey.
For local businesses, prioritize qualified calls, booked appointments, lead-to-opportunity rate, branded search demand, revenue per organic landing session, and assisted conversions where the data is reliable.
For WooCommerce, monitor product and category landing sessions, add-to-cart rate, checkout completion, transaction revenue, average order value, new versus returning customers, and assisted conversions from organic research visits.
On WordPress, keep the eligibility layer clean. Allow appropriate crawling, make important information available as rendered text, maintain useful internal links, ensure structured data matches visible content, and keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information current. Google states that there are no additional technical requirements, special AI schema, AI text file, or separate markup required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion, clicks, leads, or revenue.
The practical decision this week is simple: report AI visibility as its own layer, then judge search performance through qualified calls, opportunities, purchases, and revenue.
