How to Measure AI Overview Visibility in Search Console

Use the Generative AI performance report for Search in Google Search Console to confirm reported AI-feature impressions and the pages associated with them. Then compare those findings with the standard Web performance report, GA4, call and form tracking, CRM records, and WooCommerce data. This workflow helps a small-business operator or SEO determine whether AI search visibility is worth investigating without treating an impression as a citation, visit, lead, sale, or revenue event.

The report is useful, but it is not a complete record of every AI search interaction. Google also does not provide a universal benchmark for a healthy AI-feature impression-to-click or conversion rate.

What the report actually measures

Google’s Search Console documentation defines an impression in this report as links to a site being shown to a user in a generative AI feature on Google Search. The Search report includes AI Overviews and AI Mode, although Google says the supported feature list may change as Search develops. Data can be grouped by pages, countries, devices, and dates.

That definition is narrower than many business reports imply. An AI-feature impression does not prove that:

  • your page was cited, linked, recommended, or prominently displayed in every user-visible response;
  • the user had a meaningful opportunity to click;
  • the user visited your site;
  • the impression created incremental demand; or
  • the impression caused a lead, transaction, ranking change, or revenue increase.

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same foundational SEO requirements as regular Search. There is no additional technical requirement or special AI schema type required for eligibility. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet to be eligible as a supporting link, but meeting those conditions does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving.

For WordPress, WooCommerce, and local-service sites, that means the first response to an AI visibility report should usually be measurement and inspection—not adding an unverified AI markup file or rewriting a page solely because it received impressions.

Step 1: Confirm the property and report state

  1. Sign in to Google Search Console and select the verified Domain or URL-prefix property that covers the site you are analyzing.
  2. Open the Search performance area.
  3. Locate the Generative AI performance report for Search.
  4. Set a date range before interpreting the result. Record the property, date range, export date, and filters.
  5. Classify the report as absent, empty, or populated.

Google announced the dedicated reports on June 3, 2026, and stated that the generative AI insights had rolled out to websites worldwide by August 31, 2026. However, the Search Console Help: Generative AI Performance Report (Search) still explains that some properties may not show the report while rollout takes time or because they have not received enough AI-feature impressions.

Therefore, an absent report is an availability result, not evidence that Google restricted the site. An empty report is different: the report exists, but there may be no data for the selected scope or period. A populated report should provide rows that you can inspect by page and other dimensions.

Step 2: Inspect pages, markets, devices, and dates

Start with the page view and record the URLs shown. Pay attention to the final linked URL and Google’s selected canonical URL. Search Console may assign page data to the final URL or the canonical Google selected rather than the URL you expected to see.

Then review the available dimensions in this order:

  • Pages: identify service pages, product-category pages, product pages, informational content, or location pages associated with the reported impressions.
  • Countries: determine whether the visibility is concentrated in the United States or in a different market. For a nationwide U.S. business, this can reveal whether the observed pattern is broad or limited.
  • Devices: look for mobile or desktop concentration before comparing onsite behavior.
  • Dates: review whether impressions are isolated, sustained, or clustered around a short period.

Record impressions, the selected date range, the visible comparison period if available, and any filters. Dates in this report use Pacific Time, so document that when comparing with GA4, CRM exports, advertising platforms, or daily WooCommerce reports.

Search Console also warns that chart totals and table totals can differ because they use different aggregation levels, including property-level and page-level aggregation. Do not force the chart and table to reconcile as though they were duplicate calculations.

Step 3: Export and preserve the evidence

Use the report’s export option for the chart and table data. Preserve the original files with a simple record containing:

  • Search Console property;
  • report name;
  • export date;
  • date range and time-zone assumption;
  • country, device, page, or other filters;
  • the URLs and canonical information shown; and
  • any visible comparison period.

Review the export for URL-level rows, country and device concentration, and date trends. Search Console exports remain subject to normal row limits and reporting aggregation. A small export is not necessarily a complete inventory of every page or query associated with the site.

Also note that the generative AI report uses data from the Web search type in the Search Console Performance report. It should not be treated as a complete log of every AI interaction or every Search Labs experiment; Google’s documentation notes that active Search Labs experiment data is excluded.

Step 4: Compare it with standard Search performance

Open the standard Search Console Web performance report for a comparable date range. Review:

  • clicks;
  • impressions;
  • click-through rate;
  • queries;
  • pages;
  • countries; and
  • devices.

Use the AI report to identify pages and AI-feature impressions. Use the standard Web report to examine overall Search activity for those pages or the wider property. Look for directionally related movement, such as a service page appearing in the AI report while its broader Web impressions or clicks also change.

Do not expect identical totals. The reports describe different views of Search activity, and page, property, chart, and table aggregation can differ. The Search Console Help: Performance Report for Search Results is useful for the standard comparison workflow, but matching its totals exactly to the AI report is not a valid success test.

Step 5: Hand the question off to GA4 and business data

Search Console measures activity before a visitor reaches the site. GA4 measures onsite behavior and actions. Google explains in Google Search Central: Using Search Console and Google Analytics Data for SEO that clicks and sessions use different systems and will not necessarily match.

Before deciding that AI visibility did or did not affect the business, check:

  • that the relevant WordPress templates and landing pages contain the GA4 tag;
  • that GA4 reports use a consistent organic-search filter;
  • that consent settings do not exclude a material portion of sessions or events;
  • that forms, phone links, call tracking, and chat events are configured and tested;
  • that lead events or other key events are marked and recorded consistently;
  • that WooCommerce purchase and revenue events are present if the site sells online;
  • that landing-page URLs are mapped correctly after redirects and canonicalization; and
  • that attribution assumptions and time zones are documented.

Compare trends rather than treating a Search Console click as an expected one-to-one GA4 session. Data timing, preliminary Search Console data, missing tags, consent, traffic classification, attribution models, canonical URLs, and time-zone differences can all affect the comparison.

Hypothetical example: WooCommerce category visibility without more sessions

Hypothetical scenario: A WooCommerce store sees AI-feature impressions for a category page containing commercial products. The owner does not see an obvious increase in GA4 organic landing-page sessions for that page.

The correct next step is not automatically to change the category copy, add AI-specific markup, or conclude that the report is useless. The operator should:

  1. Check whether the category page appears in the exported AI report and note its selected canonical URL.
  2. Compare the same date range in standard Search performance for clicks, impressions, CTR, queries, and page rows.
  3. Check GA4 landing-page sessions with an organic-search filter and confirm that the page URL is not being rewritten or grouped unexpectedly.
  4. Review consented key events, add-to-cart events, checkout events, and WooCommerce transactions.
  5. Check phone, form, or assisted-conversion records if the store also supports sales enquiries.
  6. Compare reporting time zones and attribution settings before drawing a conclusion.

If the AI report is populated but clicks, sessions, and transactions do not change, the evidence supports a limited statement: Google reported AI-feature visibility for the page during that period. It does not establish that the AI feature caused a business outcome. If standard Search clicks and qualified ecommerce events also rise, that is a useful correlation to investigate, but it is still not proof that AI visibility alone caused the increase.

The same diagnostic model applies to a local-service page. Check form submissions, tracked calls, appointment enquiries, CRM records, and landing-page sessions rather than relying on the AI impression count.

Verification checklist before changing the site

Complete this checklist before rewriting a page or changing measurement:

  • Correct verified Domain or URL-prefix property selected.
  • Generative AI report classified as absent, empty, or populated.
  • Date range recorded, including the Pacific Time limitation.
  • Pages, countries, devices, dates, impressions, final URLs, and canonical behavior reviewed.
  • Export retained with filters, property, and export date.
  • Chart and table differences treated as aggregation differences, not data failure.
  • Standard Web performance checked for clicks, impressions, CTR, queries, and pages.
  • GA4 tag and organic-search landing-page report verified.
  • Consent behavior and key-event collection tested.
  • Phone, form, CRM, or appointment tracking checked for local-service sites.
  • WooCommerce transaction and revenue events checked for ecommerce sites.
  • Time zones, attribution assumptions, preliminary data, and canonical URLs documented.

A populated report should lead to inspectable rows and a measurement handoff. An absent report should be recorded as unavailable or not yet populated, not automatically as a restriction. A GA4 mismatch should trigger implementation, scope, timing, and attribution checks—not an assumption that either platform is malfunctioning.

Before changing a page, which evidence will you document alongside the AI-feature impression: standard Search clicks, GA4 landing-page sessions, leads, calls, or WooCommerce transactions?
